Silica-Free Products
Engineered stone, also known as artificial stone or quartz-resin, is widely used for kitchen surfaces and other furniture surfaces. This product is made from powders containing up to 98% free crystalline silica, bound with a polymer resin. This can lead to high exposure to free crystalline silica, causing silicosis.
Frit, which has the property of being a non-crystalline amorphous solid, thus comparable to glass, can replace this crystalline silica.
Obviously, frit must meet certain requirements to be used in engineered stone; in particular, it must have high hardness (equal to or greater than 5 Mohs) and a high affinity for resin.
Italforni, thanks to important collaborations with the world’s leading frit producers, has developed a complete, fully automated plant for the production of silica-free minerals.
